Surendra Manilal Mehta, who made the Mehtas a household name in South India, is the patriarch of Mehta Jewellery. With a wealth of experience and goodwill earned over close to 75 years in business, Surendrabhai is renowned for his expertise in diamond selection. He has set the standards in the diamond trade, standards which others strive to emulate. He has nurtured the values and the reputation which have made the Mehtas famous today.
After five decades of heading the diamond business at Bapalal & Co., Surendra Mehta established Mehta Jewellery as an independent brand in 1991, with his elder son, Tushaar, his youngest brother, Naresh, and his younger son, Abhay.
With a B.Tech in Metallurgy from IIT - Madras, Tushaar trained under the tutelage of his uncle, the late Harindra S. Mehta. His knowledge of gemstones and his penchant for precision and artistic craftsmanship were well-known. His ability to lead, combined with over 35 years' experience in the gem and jewellery trade, saw him as one of the first Chairmen of the Gold Club of Chennai. Passionate about the Mehta brand, Tushaar remained Senior Trustee and one of the four pillars of Mehta Jewellery till his untimely passing in 2005.
Naresh Mehta has a degree in Law and chose the business of diamonds to showcase his brilliance. He has played a pivotal role in establishing the brand equity of Mehta Jewellery. With the benefit of training under his eldest brother, Surendra Mehta, and over 30 years' experience in the jewellery business, Naresh looks after sales in India and abroad. His people-skills, personal charm, and keen business acumen continue to drive the upward mobility of Brand Mehta's sales graph.
Together with nephew Abhay, Naresh Mehta represents the active face of Mehta Jewellery today.
A Graduate Gemologist from GIA (USA), Abhay began his career in 1981, learning to brute and cut diamonds, and handcraft them into fine jewellery. He completed his Executive Management Programme from IIM, Bangalore. His unique talent lies in the art of identifying doshams or black spots, a skill he learnt from his father, Surendra Mehta. Abhay is proud of being amongst the earliest to achieve the ISO certification for Quality and Design in 2003 for Mehta Jewellery.
The active management of Mehta Jewellery today rests on Abhay's able shoulders. Drawing from his heritage, he brings sincerity, creativity and a passion for excellence to every product.
Abhay Mehta strongly believes in the words of John Ruskin – When love and skill work together, expect a masterpiece.
